5 Bathroom Organizing Tips

The bathroom has a lot of use by a number of people.  it is a high traffic area in the home. Use the space well in the bathroom to make storage efficient. Here are 5 tips to help make your bathroom function better and safely.

1. Have a drawer for each person who uses the bathroom to store his or her toiletries and cosmetics.  If you don’t have the space to store items in the bathroom, give each person a basket to transport their things to the bathroom from his or her bedroom, where the basket is stored.

2. Purchase under-sink storage shelves or baskets to make good use of this under-utilized area.

3.  If medications are stored in the bathroom, safely store them where small children can’t gain access.

4.  Store cleaning supplies safely, out of the reach of children, nearby so you can do quick cleans ups.

5.  Add hooks or towel bars to the walls or over-the-door racks/hooks to hang and dry towels after use.  Not enough room in the bathroom?  Install hooks or bars in the bedrooms.  This will keep towels off the floor, neat and clean.

I feel the light fixture in a space is so important. A fixture can truly make or break a room, and typically I live by the motto GO big, or GO home!

I enjoy a very light room also. Usually in most rooms I suggest that a vary of lightning be available so the light in a room can be adjusted as needed. Overhead lighting, movable lighting(lamp), counter or table top lighting that can be repositioned as needed.

Schedule a day and time so you get it done. Leaving it for “someday” means it might not get done. If you run into a dilemma just post your questions on the blog.

I love the hooks idea. I find few people want to take the time to hang up towels, not to mention to tri-fold them and hang them attractively. For kids, even sewing a loop on the top to make it easy to hang is a good idea. The first tip about having a container to go between bathroom and bedroom is much like the dorm setup. If you can’t hang towels in the bathroom, you can always put a rack over the door in the bedroom as well!

Thanks for suggesting sewing a loop on a towel or two loops so the towel is spread out a bit. That would make it easy for kids.

I love to place cleaning supplies in a plastic basket under the sink in the powder room. With such a small space, keeping these items in a bin helps minimize spills. It works pretty well.

    • Julie Stobbe on January 25, 2021 at 6:57 pm

Under the sink is a common location for cleaning supplies. If people have children or pets they should put the cleaning supplies up higher.

It’s a terrific idea to have designated spots for individual family members- be it cubbies, shelves, or traveling bins. Another tip for keeping a bathroom organized is to store like-with-like. So if you have space, make a drawer for “oral care” and another one for “make-up,” etc.

Under-sink storage is tricky but this is post is quite helpful! Thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Julie Stobbe on January 25, 2021 at 7:01 pm

The under the sink area is very different in each bathroom. It does make it a tricky storage space. It is sometimes good for towels or cleaning supplies if there are no children or pets in the home, extra inventory, or baskets.

Very nifty, Julie. I love the shelving unit you show in #2; do you know what brand it is or where it’s sold? It’s a fabulous way to deal with the u-shaped pipe taking up such weird space.

These are all excellent tips. My main under-sink tip is to use plastic/rubber dish pans as slide-out drawers to contain bottles of cleaners or toiletries, preventing any leaks or spills from damaging the wood of in the interior cabinet.

Oh, and I love that swing-out towel bar!

  11. Julie Stobbe on January 27, 2021 at 4:59 am

I use the shelf that fits around the plumbing in my kitchen also. Google under the sink shelf and you can this product. It is sold by Wayfair and Amazon. Sometimes Target Walmart or Home Depot has it.

The swing-out towel bar is from IKEA.

I use bins as drawers in the cupboard too. Base cabinets are very deep and it is hard to get things out from the back of the cupboard.
