Can you recycle VHS tapes?

Update 2022

It would be wonderful if there was a way to recycle VHS tapes.  I have not been able to connect with Project Get Reel.  I don’t think they are in business.  If you need information about recycling and donating items ask your questions in the comments or contact me. at julie@mindoverclutter.ca

I first published this blog in May 2015.  I have been notified that Project Get Reel has received their e-waste license and is up and running.

VHS tapes are 80% recyclable but most end up in landfills.  It is a labour intensive job to dismantle the tapes into their component parts.  “Project Get Reel is giving people an environmentally safe way to dispose of tapes while providing employment to people who may face barriers to securing a job.”  They launched this business on April 9,2015.  View the video on this site to learn more about recycling VHS tapes. Watch for more news about this business trying to help the environment and provide sustainable employment for residents in Ontario Canada

I am glad to hear you are up and running. It is a service many Professional Organizers can use for their client’s VHS tapes. Congratulations.

Wow, this is great! I’ve wondering what to do with all my old data CDs and I see they take those too.

I can’t wait until they expand and make it easier to get CDs and VHS tapes to them for recycling. I think I will ask my electronic recycling company to partner with them. I will keep you posted.

It is now September 2019. Is this outfit still running? I just discovered it but it says it’s a private site.
    Thanks,
    Kim

Thanks for your comment Kim. Here is the link to their Facebook page which has events listed for September 2019. They recycle lots of other items too like car seats. https://www.facebook.com/projectgetreel/ They now go by Red Propeller. Unfortunately I don’t know why their website is private.

On the website for Project Get Rell / RedPropeller it says they’re not accepting donations for now of recyclables, because they’re searching for a new building for their operations…have had boxes of VHS tapes sitting around for 20+ years now, guess just have to hold onto them awhile longer…

I have been waiting for a company to be able to recycle cassette tapes and video tapes too.

Is Project Get Reel still around? When I click on the link all I get is a message stating that the redpropeller.ca site cannot be found.

I have been having trouble contacting them too. I think @ProjectGetReel is not operating at this time.
