Beat Black Friday, avoid the chaos

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are fast approaching. There may be some deals you can find.  Ask yourself:

  1. Will you be spending a lot of your valuable time looking for that special holiday deal?
  2. Will you end up purchasing things that cause clutter for you or a friend?
  3. Will you overspend on your budget?
  4. Will you be happy with your purchases?

Fun Facts

Here are some fun facts.  The term Black Friday first became used widely in the 1990’s and refers to retailers reaching profitability or in the black – black ink, as opposed to losses that were originally recorded in red ink.

Black Friday sales declined only once in recent years. It was 2008 during the  Recession. Only 263,820 seasonal workers were hired in 2008 – a staggering low compared to the record 764,750 workers hired in 2013.

Here’s an idea you don’t have to wait in line for.

I remember enjoying Black Friday when I was in high school. It felt fun to go to the mall and see all the decorations and shop. Now it feels more like a struggle and competition. Nice to consider alternatives!

Thanks for your comment that in different times /stages of our lives different activities appeal to us. It is ok to remember them fondly and move on to different ways of doing things

I didn’t realize that Black Friday has been around since the ’90s. Interesting. I mostly ignore the two sale days, but this year, I need a few things anyway, so I’m waiting to purchase them when I can take advantage of the sales.

The fun facts article pointed out that the sales are better in December than the Black Friday offers. It is interesting how marketing has been effective to make us feel that we should not miss Black Friday events.

I live reading the newspaper ads on Thanksgiving and (in non-pandemic years) exploring the stores on the afternoon of Black Friday after all the morning shoppers have finished and gone home to nap. But the truth is, I just don’t need “stuff” or even enjoy most tangible things, as opposed to experiences. Getting and staying organized is a gift to yourself, for sure, and to all the others who have reached the point where they can appreciate it.

I too used to be a mall goer to see the decorations, people watch, listen to the music and feel the holiday season starting. Shopping has never been a fun thing for me. I have a list and a store in mind and get it done quickly. The funny thing about walking around the mall is I figure out where all my clients find the stuff that I organize for them.

I really like the way you put the packages together, Julie. I think that helps people when they are thinking about getting organized and spending money on an organizer. Having a target – like holiday clean-up – is a great way to prompt someone to think – Yes!

I’m not much of a shopper. I like to get in and out of the stores as quickly as possible and so avoid big sale days when there tend to be large crowds. Your statistics were really interesting!

Thanks for your comments. A marketing person suggested I name the packages to help people understand some of the things I do. This year I think I should name one, get ready for a move. There are a lot of people in my area moving.
