Organizing your paper photos.
Have you run out of space on your walls to hang your pictures? Many people have photos in boxes just waiting to have time to organize them. Don’t wait for the perfect time or for a day when the weather is inclement. Schedule time to get started.
What to do first
As you look over the photos you may not be able to remember when you took the picture, the year or date. Instead of organizing the photos chronologically think about using themes. Sort your pictures into celebrations, vacations, family, friends, pets and homes etc.
Step two
Next, get rid of duplicates and out of focus pictures. Remove pictures where you don’t recognize the people or location. Once you have your best pictures grouped you may want to write on the back the name of the people in the picture, year or location.
Step three
Now you can decide if you want to scan them, place them in boxes with dividers or scrapbook your photos. Scanning can be expensive so scan the best of the best. You can digitize them yourself by taking a picture of the photo with your phone and saving it to a folder on your laptop.

I like that you encourage us to organize by theme rather than date. In most cases, that’s how we’ll remember events anyway when we want to find those photos – “that time we went to Florida” as opposed to “March break 2013.” I think this is one of the most enjoyable things to organize!
When you organize by theme you can see stories develop. See all the vacations you have been on over the years and how the types of vacations you have taken changed. My favourite theme is looking at all the cars I have owned over the years stating with a red Javelin.
Organizing by theme rather than chronologically is a great suggestion. Memories are often recollected by the event rather than the year. Thanks for sharing these tips.
Sometimes it is nice to see what happened in a year but often it is more fun to see how something has changed over time. Glad you enjoyed the post
For most of us, the backlog of photos prevents putting it all together in exact chronological order! LOL So it is nice to be reminded that other ways work even better. And I am even OK with decorated theme storage boxes!! The few scrapbooks that I did make seem so bulky & heavy now.
Just tonight I was noticing my box of organized photos and the photo albums on the shelf below. I thought the same thing. That box takes up less space than those albums. I am glad I stopped making albums.
This came at a perfect time for us. We are downsizing and the photos have me swamped! Your suggestions lightened my load! Now I can get to it with a different mindset and realize we don’t need to keep pictures of every tree that has ever grown!
I am glad I could help. Good luck with your downsizing. If you need some help book a virtual organizing appointment with me. julie@mindoverclutter.ca
